Nevis may just have it all, and we sure are proud of that! During March our island is at it’s most fertile, and therefore it seems only right that we hold a fair to celebrate all the incredible produce that is grown locally. Held in the Charlestown Secondary School field, the stalls of food range from Okra to Sugar Apples, and capture every colour in the rainbow, creating for a very colourful afternoon.
With the abundance of fruit and vegetables, the only answer to rival that is the livestock up for grabs as well. With sheep, cows, goats and roosters creating their very own live orchestra, this fair triumphs over any farmers’ markets you may have visited. With this fair seen not only as a place to buy and sell, but as a brilliant day out for the family, young and old. With having to avoid all previously said animals and stalls, children running around is simply another obstacle you have to overcome in order to navigate this school yard.
If you’re feeling lucky, then again, the Agricultural fair could reward you with anything from an egg to a puppy to a full grown cow! The various raffles that go throughout the day ensure that all animals in the dip are given to new owners. Having attended throughout the years, the yearly disappointment of seeing someone walk off with the puppy or a piglet is still very fresh.
And what Caribbean agricultural fair would be complete without the intoxicating smells of a barbeque? None! Down at the Agricultural fair, the barbeques are littered with bbq chicken, freshly caught fish and ribs covered in the islands secret famous sauce! Upon arrival, you are treated to every local food imaginable, with my favourite combination being jerk chicken, rice and beans, and of course, rum fried plantain!
The Agricultural fair is one of my favourite times, an excellent display of all Nevis has to offer, with their organic produce. At Mount Nevis Hotel, we too believe in the produce of Nevis being unmatchable, and so we too, have our own organic garden to make sure the best of Nevis is always there for our guests.
