St. Kitts and Nevis is a country steeped in history, and many of the monumental stages of its history are hidden in broad daylight. However, a new tour has just been created on Nevis that takes you on foot, throughout Charlestown highlighting all the key parts of Caribbean history as well as Nevis’. Through walking, the tour guide is able to stop at parts of the town previously thought to have no significance, but later we find out that Nevis played a much larger role in history than thought. After living here for 15 years, I can say that only now have I learnt the full extent of the history of this little island.
Starting at the port, the tour makes its way in a loop, stopping at all the highlights of modern Charlestown, with mention of the devastating hurricane Maria in 2017, to the ancient world of Alexander Hamilton. With the hustle and bustle of Charlestown in the background, one does become entranced in the history of this island, and how much we have achieved.
Within the ticket price, entrance into the Alexander Hamilton Museums are included, and this is the perfect way to end such an interactive tour, being able to find out in even more depth what was happening in the world, with particular focus on Europe’s, Africa’s and Nevis’ history date by date.
I would suggest wearing a hat and bringing sunscreen as the tour sets of at 9:30am and is roughly an hour and a half, water is included and is given out at the beginning, and with that midmorning heat it is a lovely touch! For those who not only love history and exploration, the word on the street is that a new tour with the same company is being introduced, and this will consist of a historical food tour, something that I am far too excited for. We may be a small island, but there is always so much going on! If you would like to experience a historical tour, at the Mount Nevis reception we would be more than happy to book you on!
