Only a short bus shuttle away from Mount Nevis, and an even shorter walk away from Nisbet’s beach, Herbert’s is the untouched, raw Caribbean tranquility that we all crave. White, soft sand and amazing snorkeling just off the beach, this hangout is one not to be missed. We at Mount Nevis feel that this particular spot in general really highlights the charm of Nevis that brings visitors back year after year, and so, instead of being selfish and keeping this glorious spot a secret from our guests, we are very kindly sharing this with you, and would love for any future guests to have this spot on their ‘To Do’ list.
Although the official name is Herbert’s, island slang, and you’ll soon realize why, has affectionately labelled it ‘Greasy Pole’. Due to an old coconut tree falling over on the rocks, one which has had to be replaced year after year, the tradition to run to the end of the pole and jump in the water was born, and with it, the addition of grease! Over the Culturama festival the beach becomes one of the hottest places to be, with the winner of the pole run winning a glorious ham that has been hung at the end. However, at any other time of the year the Greasy Pole is the perfect beach hangout for anyone, with people all ages attempting to reach the end. Growing up on the island, Herbert’s was the perfect hang out for us kids, whilst also offering the calm relaxation our parents desperately needed. However, as a tip to those who try, I suggest ditching the grease and just let the water naturally ensure the pole to be slippery!
The draw that this little patch of sand has is phenomenal, pack a cooler, sunscreen, towels and expect to have one relaxing afternoon. I love to come here at around 3pm for an afternoon swim and a place to read my book whilst the wind cools you down from the sun. The shallow, crystal blue water is the perfect company required on a hot Nevisian day, however, with every beach day, a cool, refreshing Carib may just make you miss that flight back home, and here at Mount Nevis we’d be more than happy to help you stay!
